God’s Word For You

God’s Word for You

How much do I really need to know about the Bible? Do I have to read the whole book?

God’s Response

Hilkiah said to Shaphan the court secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the LORD’s Temple!” . . . So Shaphan read it to the king. When the king heard what was written in the Law, he tore his clothes in despair. . . .“Our ancestors have not obeyed the word of the LORD.” 2 Chronicles 34:15, 18-21

To think that you only need to read part of the Bible to know God is like thinking you can only read part of a good book or see part of a great movie to know the whole story. King Josiah realized the importance of this scroll when it was rediscovered in the Temple (it was lost during the reigns of previous evil kings). It probably contained the first five books of the Bible that spelled out God’s plan for right living to the Israelites. Josiah immediately knew that calamity had come on the nation of Israel because they had stopped reading and obeying God’s Word. The Bible is the key to knowing how to obey God and avoid calamity. The more you read it, the clearer you will be about how God wants you to live.
