Fearing God

The Bible says that I should fear God. What does that mean?

God’s Response

It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. . . . Voices shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire building was filled with smoke.Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.” Isaiah 6:1, 4-5

Normally, we think of fear as an unpleasant emotion tied to anxious concern or outright terror of being harmed. A different definition of fear can lead to something wonderful. The fear of God is complete awe and respect for him, and a realization that everything he says about love and justice is true. To fear the Lord is to recognize that God is holy, almighty, righteous, all-knowing, and wise. When you regard God correctly, you gain a clearer picture of yourself as sinful, weak, and needy. The only response to a God who loves you as you are is to fall at his feet in humble respect. Isaiah recognized his sinfulness before the God who holds the power of life and death in his hands. His example encourages us to never take God’s love and presence in our lives for granted.
