Burnout
Burnout
What should I do if I’m experiencing burnout?
God’s Response
When David and his men were in the thick of battle, David became weak and exhausted. 2 Samuel 21:15
I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart. Psalm 38:8
Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening? . . . You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.” Exodus 18:14, 18
If you become unusually weak and exhausted in the middle of doing your work, or if you constantly feel overwhelmed, you may be experiencing burnout. Sometimes you feel burnt out at the end of a project or a great personal victory. When you are stretched in every direction for too long, you lose focus and can’t do anything well. You can reach this point quickly when the holidays and finals all seem to crash in on you. To enjoy the spirit of Christmas, you need to pause. Adequate sleep, good nourishment, and asking for help will refresh you so that you can truly enjoy the season.
