How do I get beyond someone’s appearance and get to know them?

Don’t judge by his appearance or height. . . . The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a [person] who fears the LORD will be greatly praised. Proverbs 31:30

One of the hardest things to do is to look beyond a person’s appearance right into his or her heart. Outward appearances are distracting, whether a person is beautiful or unattractive. Just as you must exercise your body to keep it healthy, you must exercise your mind to keep it in good shape. A healthy mind is smart enough to look beyond physical appearance; it becomes an expert in recognizing inner beauty. This will open up all kinds of potential new relationships. You will be drawn to those who are beautiful on the inside. For those who aren’t, you will be better trained to help them do a makeover of their inner selves. When Jesus cleanses us from sin, he makes us beautiful on the inside.
