What does Jesus mean when he said we are the “salt of the earth”?

You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Matthew 5:13

“Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me some of that water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again.” John 4:15

In Jesus’ day, salt was an extremely valuable commodity. It was used for seasoning and as a preservative to keep meat from decaying. Jesus compares his followers to salt because we are to exert a preservative influence on the world around us. When we keep our hearts holy and pure and hold up the standards of living established by God’s Word, we help preserve the world from total decay. How “salty” is your life today? Do your words and actions exert a preservative influence over others? Does your life make others thirsty for God?

God’s Promise

Be careful how you live among your unbelieving neighbors. Even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will believe and give honor to God when he comes to judge the world. 1 Peter 2:12
