How can I control my thoughts when I start to envy those around me?

God’s Response

This was their song: “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!” This made Saul very angry. 1 Samuel 18:7-8

From that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David. . . . A tormenting spirit from God overwhelmed Saul. 1 Samuel 18:9-10

Saul, who had a spear in his hand, suddenly hurled it at David. 1 Samuel 18:10-11

Saul was afraid of him. 1 Samuel 18:12

Notice the progression of Saul’s jealousy. It began with envy that festered until it tormented him. This torment led to uncontrolled rage and finally, to paranoia. Saul’s jealousy consumed him to the point that he could think of nothing else. Only murder would solve his problem. Obviously, he had become completely ineffective for God. This story illustrates the power of envy to take over your life if you take no steps to stop it. To stop envy in its tracks you must stop comparing your situation with that of others and instead focus on what God has already given you.
