Does a leader’s character matter?

God’s Response

Suppose a certain man is just and does what is lawful. . . . Suppose he is a merciful creditor . . . and does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for people in need. And suppose he . . . stays away from injustice, is honest and fair when judging others, and faithfully obeys my laws and regulations. Anyone who does these things is just and will surely live, says the Sovereign LORD. Ezekiel 18:5, 7-9

Even children are known by the way they act, whether their conduct is pure and right. Proverbs 20:11

If a leader performs well in his public life, does his personal life matter? Yes. Justice, righteousness, integrity, mercy, honesty, fairness, and faithfulness are essential traits of a godly leader’s character because they reflect who a person really is. For example, you cannot be honest in your public life and be a liar and cheat in your personal life. It doesn’t work that way. You are who you are, twenty-four hours a day. If you are demonstrating certain ungodly characteristics, you can be sure they will surface in all areas of your life—personal and public.

God’s Challenge

Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won’t be faithful in large ones. If you cheat even a little, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. Luke 16:10
