Spice It Up

God made two great lights. . . . He also made the stars. Genesis 1:16

Visit any restaurant where the food doesn’t come in a bag, and you’ll see some sort of garnish on the side of the plate—orange slices, parsley sprigs, cherry peppers, or even little orchid blossoms. No one ever eats the stuff, but the plate would look unfinished without a garnish.

Surely the sun and moon would have been enough for God to create. One lit up the daytime sky, and the other governed the night, but God understood the need for garnish.

Imagine how bare the evening sky would seem without stars. Also, just as parsley is useful in cleansing your breath or settling your stomach, stars serve a useful purpose for navigation (and childhood wishes).

When you’re designing a new product or service, take a step back and look beyond the utilitarian basics. Is there a garnish that would add value to an otherwise mundane presentation?
