Set A Good Example

Both Abraham and his son, Ishmael, were circumcised on that same day, along with all the other men and boys of the household. Genesis 17:26-27

One of a leader’s most difficult responsibilities is to set an example for the troops. It’s easy to find reasons for ignoring certain guidelines, but doing so undermines your team-building efforts and erodes common objectives.

Consider the message you broadcast to the staff when you’re the only one who doesn’t wear the corporate uniform at a trade show.

Being on time for meetings, returning phone calls, and submitting expense vouchers on deadline are commonly abused. So are getting enough rest and taking vacations.

As a leader, sometimes you will do things no one else is doing. This defines the job, just like setting an example for others to follow. Abraham could have used a number of excuses to pull rank and avoid the inconvenience of circumcision.
