Put God First

Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts. 1 John 5:21

In his December 2003 commencement address to undergrads at Biola University, Veggie Tales cocreator Phil Vischer tells the real-life tale of how his incredibly successful animation enterprise was sold to the highest bidder as the result of a brutal legal battle.

Everything he had worked for was gone. The cute characters he and his partner had given birth to and nurtured were now owned by someone else. He wondered why God had taken away a dream that was helping so many kids.

Then it hit him:

“If God gives you a dream and breathes life into it and shows up in it—and it dies, it may be that God wants to know what’s more important to you—the dream, or him.”

Even if God gave you the mission you’re leading, your relationship with him is still more important. No matter what God has given you to do, it must not take God’s place in your heart.
