Play With Patience

When working with leaders, I often ask whether they prefer to play checkers or chess.

In checkers, the object of each move is to jump as many of your opponent’s pieces as possible. A game of checkers can be over in less than a minute.

Chess requires intense concentration and extreme patience. Great chess players plot out entire games in their heads before making a single move. The time between moves is often monitored by a stop clock, and games can last for days.

God is the ultimate chess player.

He gave Habakkuk a vision of the future, with the proviso that the realization of the vision was a long way off.

How patient are you? Are you more likely to run the board and jump every piece, or can you wait patiently until all the parts of your plan fall into place?
