Mind Your Own Business

Why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? Luke 6:41

One of the most fruitless distractions for an organization is paying too much attention to their competition. It’s certainly important to know what they’re doing, but some leaders take this to the extreme. They spend more time analyzing the other guy’s decisions than they do making their own.

The result is a crop of reactive and shortsighted ideas.

Jesus reminds us that our perspectives are often out of alignment to the point where we see tiny specks of dust as much larger than they really are. We focus so intently on the speck of dust that we completely lose sight of our own, much larger, internal issues.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus emphasizes the wisdom of maintaining a focus on our own agendas. He teaches us to focus on problems that we are responsible for and not to waste time on those we can’t control.

As Grandma used to say, “Pay attention to your own knitting.”
