Look Beneath The Surface
Look Beneath the Surface
Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly. John 7:24
My friend Andy conducts a lot of business in Pacific Rim countries. One particular Chinese factory was causing him concern because he knew they were giving one of his competitors a much lower price on similar goods.
No matter what he tried, Andy’s attempts to negotiate better terms met a closed door.
Then he learned this particular factory’s boss was very traditional and refused to do business with anyone who did not come with a proper referral from a mutual friend. Once a formal introduction was arranged, the doors opened, and this factory is now one of Andy’s top suppliers.
Jesus knew that a person’s actions weren’t always an accurate measure of their motives. If someone is doing something you don’t understand or agree with, consider why they are acting as they are.
If you are facing a situation in which someone’s actions seem uncooperative or hostile, explore the reasons for their behavior before writing them off.
Does your leadership tool kit include an ability to look beneath the surface?
