Derek Redmond was running the Olympic 400-meter race for Great Britain in the 1992 games.

As he rounded the final turn, the intense pain of a torn leg muscle brought him to the ground. With the crowd watching in disbelief, Redmond got up and started hopping on one foot toward the finish line.

That’s when Jim Redmond, Derek’s father, bolted out of the stands, pushed medics and security guards aside, and came to his son’s assistance. Putting his arm around Derek’s back, the elder Redmond walked with his son until he could cross the finish line.

The crowd went wild.

There are times when your role as a leader is to stand on the sidelines and cheer as your team accomplishes something. At other times, you’ll be asked to leave your seat in the stands and help them finish the race.
