Keep Looking Ahead

Jacob was terrified at the news. He divided his household, along with the flocks and herds and camels, into two groups. He thought, “If Esau meets one group and attacks it, perhaps the other group can escape.” Genesis 32:7-8

A friend who spends a lot of time in crowded airport terminals taught me to “bat walk.”

Bats are virtually blind, so they send radar signals ahead of them. This allows them to fly through dense forests without hitting any branches.

Bat walking is the practice of walking through a crowded terminal or down a city sidewalk with your eyes scanning the crowd twenty to thirty feet ahead. By doing so, you can adjust your direction and flow through the sea of people with amazing smoothness.

Leadership also requires some bat walking.

By keeping your gaze far ahead of the immediate environment, you will be able to adjust to whatever comes your way.

Jacob looked ahead, saw what might be happening, and devised a plan before it was too late. You should too.
