Don’t Cheat Your Workers

Listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The wages you held back cry out against you. James 5:4

The immigration issue our country is facing provides a twenty-first-century application of this Scripture, but the leadership lesson goes beyond field-workers.

Consider some of the ways workers get cheated of their pay:

• Managers are often too busy to conduct scheduled salary and performance reviews.
• Employees are told there’s no margin for increased pay, while executive salaries are disproportionately high.
• Staff contributions to the health plan are raised so the profit target can be met, allowing for better management bonuses.
• A worthy employee is denied a deserved raise because the job market is tight, and he or she can’t afford to leave.

Is there anything in your wage and benefit policy that might “cry out against you”?

“Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it” (James 4:17).

It’s all God’s money. Be generous with it.
