Do What Only You Can Do

Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe . . . [and] he began to wash the disciples’ feet. John 13:3-5

In writing these daily devotions, God has given me fresh insight on some passages that I thought I knew fairly well. This is one of those instances.

Jesus was able to wash his followers’ feet because he was secure in knowing that there were certain things only he could do. He told Peter, “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me” (John 13:8).

We often get stuck on the foot washing and miss the deeper lesson, which is that there are some things that only a leader can do, such as setting vision, establishing standards, and praising a job well done.

As the leader, there are certain things only you are qualified to do.
