Challenge Authority Respectfully
Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted. Romans 13:1-2
When you work for someone, he or she sets the agenda. Your job is to do what you’re trained to do, within the standards and guidelines set by the person who signs your paycheck.
What if they’re wrong? What if they’re making a mistake?
Learn to effect change while respecting the standards you are trying to alter.
If policy dictates that you color inside the lines, request specific permission to go outside the lines. Be clear about why you think it’s a good idea and what you hope to accomplish. Suggest a way to measure the results of your new idea. Show respect by providing regular updates on your nonstandard activities.
Paul may have been thinking of how Jesus handled the religious establishment of his day. He respected their position as Jewish leaders, while always suggesting a better way to do things.
Raise your hand and say, “May I have your permission to break the rules?”
