Hearing His Voice #293

I [Paul] pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.

Ephesians 3:16

The visiting speaker had a reputation for insightful prophetic words—expressing God’s heart for people in situations that no stranger could have known on his own. And even during this service, he spoke directly into the lives of people with remarkable precision. So a woman who had come with a desperate plea for God to give her specific confirmation about her calling had high expectations. And those expectations were dashed when the speaker finally called her out and simply said, “Trust God.”

That wasn’t the specific word she was looking for, and she was deeply disappointed. But she went back to the next service with high hopes again. And when she heard the same message to “trust God,” she was crushed. Why wouldn’t God give her specific confirmation like He was doing for so many around her? Why would He remain silent on matters He had clearly spoken to her about before? After praying through her confusion and pain, she realized the answer. She had already heard God clearly, and asking for another confirmation came from a lack of trust. God was letting her know she could rely on what she had already heard.

Can you trust the Holy Spirit who is in you? That’s what many of our questions about His will come down to. We can be so worried about being mistaken that we forget His greater power to keep us in the truth. We’re suspicious of anything in our own hearts, even when we’ve received direct promises and confirmation about God’s work in us and His will for our lives. We forget that Jesus is in us and we can trust His Spirit. What He has spoken within our hearts is just as valid as what He speaks to us through others. When He is silent outwardly, we can rest in what He says inwardly.

Holy Spirit, may I never be guilty of downplaying the treasure You’ve put in me. You are completely trustworthy, and You reside within me. Inspire me with Your desires and direction, and give me the faith to believe.
