Experiencing God's Presence #272

I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.

John 14:18

Jesus’ heart behind this verse is clear: “From the foundation of the world, I was near while you remained distant. Eyes had not seen the Presence right next to them. Do you know how I longed to be clothed in flesh and live among you? Finally I could be seen—not by a handful of prophets tuned in to My Spirit, but by anyone with natural eyes. They could listen to My voice and see My works. Why would I limit that awareness of My Presence to three years of ministry? That enormous expense for one small moment in one small country? No, My desire is to dwell with you—all of My people—closely and unmistakably forever.

“I understand when you say you wish you had been alive when I walked among you. But it grieves Me when you don’t realize how I walk among you now. Your awareness of Me sometimes reverts to pre-Pentecost levels, but it is meant to be so much more. You make decisions without hearing My voice, pray without sensing Me in the room, and talk about Me as though I’m not listening. Why? I said I would come to you. I said My Spirit would be in you. I promised My Presence at all times. If you aren’t aware of Me, it isn’t because I’m not there. It’s because you aren’t paying close enough attention. I show Myself clearly to all who seek Me without giving up.”

When the Lord seems distant, remind Him—and yourself—that He not only promised closeness but implied that we would experience Him in practical ways. Refuse to live like an orphan. Ask Him to make His Presence known in some way today, and keep the eyes of your heart open to see what He will do.

Jesus, I know You are with me. Please show me how. Help me live in constant communion with You and with an awareness of Your Presence. May my words and actions always acknowledge that You are in the room.
