Experiencing God's Presence #144

Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly. Then the LORD will be your delight.

Isaiah 58:13-14

“I spoke these words long ago to a people living in rebellion. They set aside no time to honor me. Even though I am a God of justice, they treated people unjustly. Even though I am truth, they were careless with their lies. Even though I am welcoming, they showed no regard for strangers. They went to the Temple, prayed, and fasted—their religious impulses were active—but they didn’t know My heart. They tried to serve Me and serve themselves at the same time.

“That never works—not then, not today. I told them I prefer a different kind of ‘fast’—not a forsaking of food but a forsaking of selfishness and apathy toward others. If they would treat people fairly, seek justice, and share with those in need, I would come to them like the dawn and bring healing to them and their nation. And nothing has changed. I still love defending the defenseless, welcoming strangers, and sharing with those in need. My people see these as options; I see them as My attributes. And My attributes are anything but optional.

“I’ll give you the same promise I gave My people long ago: if you align yourself with My heart, you will find that you really treasure and enjoy your experiences with Me. Honor Me in all you do, desire what I desire, and you will find yourself powerfully supported by infinite glory. Your experience of Me depends on Your aligning with Me. When a human soul willfully contradicts Me, I withhold My Presence. I don’t fellowship with sin. But know My character and live accordingly, and I will inhabit your life.”

Lord, I know it’s foolish to seek Your Presence without seeking Your honor, integrity, and compassion, but it’s easy to miss the mark. Help me have Your character. Fill my life with every aspect of Yourself.
