My Dad’s Biz

He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Luke 2:49, NKJV

I don’t attend many home sales parties. It’s not because I don’t enjoy the products—I do. And it’s not because I don’t enjoy the company of friends—I do. It’s because there’s only so much time in the day, and I sometimes have to make hard choices, just like you.

I look for ways to spend time with people who may not know Christ. I try to serve in my community. But when I make hard choices about my schedule, I try to think like twelve-year-old Jesus, who was sitting in the Temple dialoging with the priests for so long that his ride home left! Jesus’ parents didn’t understand his priorities, and sometimes ours are misunderstood.

His parents and their entire large family had been to the Temple to make a sacrifice. Mary and Joseph thought Jesus was with other family members and were a day’s journey away before they realized he was not with them.

Mom and Dad went back, and after he had been missing for three days, they found him in the Temple, conversing with the priests so intensely that the Bible says Jesus was “astonishing” them.

Mom and Dad were not impressed! When they confronted him, Jesus responded, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49, NKJV)

Whose business is coming first? Yours? Someone else’s? God’s? Will you choose God’s priorities for you even if you are misunderstood?
