Money Can’t Buy It

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. Jeremiah 17:7

Oprah Winfrey, who tops the American talk-show circuit and sits at the helm of a $415 million empire, said, “People think because you’re on TV you have the world by a string. But I have struggled with my own self value for many, many years.”^a

What! Money, lots and lots of money, doesn’t make you feel good about yourself? How about great looks? I personally have counseled many women who are models, beauty queens, and actresses. I can guarantee, it isn’t their looks they are counting on to make them feel good about themselves. In their world, any small blemish might wreck your income. To them, beauty is a fleeting tool. So what does give us confidence?

Confidence is gained from an accurate view of God. I know I can be confident that God will fight my battles. In 2 Chronicles 32:8 Hezekiah gave his people reassurance that God would help them and fight their battle.

Here are some other verses about confidence:

• I can be confident because God is my hope, and I know he is the sovereign Lord. (Psalm 71:5)
• God also keeps me from being snared in the traps of this world, and through him I have confidence for every step I take. (Proverbs 3:26)
• God is my helper so that no one can do anything to me. (Hebrews 13:6)

This is the confidence that I can stand on. I don’t need money or good looks. All I need is God.
