Truth

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”

John 14:6

Imagine that you and your children are taking a hike in Colorado. You come upon a wide river, and another hiker tells you that there is only one bridge, down the river a mile or so. Will you stomp off in disgust and complain that it’s unfair that there’s only one bridge, or will you be grateful that there is a bridge, and use it to cross over?

Imagine that your child is struggling with a serious illness. You’ve tried every medication and treatment possible short of surgery, and now your child’s doctor tells you that surgery is the only remaining option. Will you look for a surgeon who has specialized training in the area of your child’s illness, or will you choose a person off the street?

The way of truth in these two situations seems obvious to us. But when it comes to matters of faith, we are not always so quick to see the truth. Many people today fight the reality of absolute truth as though it were an enemy. To be deemed “narrow-minded” is to be considered ignorant, it seems. But the reality is that truth is narrow. How comforting for me to know that God is truth. He’s the author of truth, and the closer we get to him, the more we live truly and truly live. We trust him with our lives because he’s the only one who really knows what life is all about.
