Doing It God’s Way
Doing It God’s Way
Read 1 Corinthians 10:14-33
Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, you must do all for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
Shane had been in my office before. The first time he had been very angry because we encouraged his live-in girlfriend, Marjie, to move out. Shane couldn’t understand why we would encourage her to leave him. He had convinced himself that he was good for Marjie, even though he was verbally abusive and had cheated on her numerous times.
Marjie’s absence left Shane feeling lonely and empty. Without her to come home to, he became desperate to fill the void. He tried more sex with more women, but it didn’t fill the void. He tried working more, but that didn’t help. He tried drinking, but that, too, left him empty. Everything he did reminded him of his difficult, painful childhood.
Shane’s parents had been involved in the sexual revolution of the 1960s, and Shane himself had begun using pornography at the age of thirteen. As a teenager, he asked Christ to be his Savior, but he never really took his faith seriously. As a result, there was no real change in his life.
That day in my office Shane was a broken man ready to make changes. The first thing out of his mouth was, “Okay, we’ll try it God’s way.”
Almost instantly Shane lost his appetite for alcohol and for sexual conquests and gained a desire for the adventure of seeking out God’s will.
Shane began finding joy in relationships based on respect rather than sex. And he became so engrossed in the Bible and in the things of God that he got involved with a youth group as a discussion leader, helping young people avoid the mistakes he had made.
Are you struggling with an emptiness that the things of the world can’t seem to fill? Like Shane, are you willing to try it God’s way?
Lord, help me to remember that your way is always the best way.
