Another Day, Another Door
Another Day, Another Door
Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 28:19
Once I traveled to Wellington, New Zealand, to work on a short-term mission with Campaign for Christ. Lots of crazy things happened to us while knocking on doors to set up Bible studies. A seventy-year-old farmer from Kansas named Harold had some of the most eye-opening experiences.
One day, shy, reserved Harold was knocking on doors with Rob—a crazy, never-met-a-stranger Kiwi (native New Zealander). Rob said that he and Harold walked up the steps of a large house in a wealthy neighborhood, and Rob rang the doorbell. Soon the wooden door opened.
An attractive young woman pushed the door wide open and smiled at them brightly. She was topless! Not befuddled by her brashness, Rob—keeping his eyes locked on her face—calmly talked to her about the Lord. As he said later, she obviously needed to know Christ badly. Rob said old Harold’s jaw dropped all the way to his knees, where it stayed until the conversation ended and he stumbled off the porch.
The next day, Harold and I were working together. We climbed some rickety wooden stairs at the side of a house and stood on a small porch. It was Harold’s turn to talk, so he knocked on the door.
When the two occupants came to the door, it was obviously—at least to me—a gay couple, one of whom was in a dress and had long hair. Harold, to his credit, held a very calm, competent conversation with the two men. They were not interested in the Lord, so we left our tract, wished them well, and walked down the stairs.
Heading for the next house, I discovered why Harold had been so talkative with the gay couple. He said, “That sure was a homely woman, wasn’t it?”
It was a long week for Harold.
Thank you, Lord, for opportunities to tell other people about you wherever we go in life. Amen.
