Read Proverbs 10

People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall.

Proverbs 10:9

Some people are very good liars. They can make up all kinds of stories and fabrications of events in order to keep themselves from being incriminated. What often happens, however, is that they can’t keep all their lies straight.

By contrast, when we speak only the truth, we have only one story to remember, the true one—no trying to remember to whom we told what, or which lie we told in what way. In other words, as the verse says, with integrity we can walk safely. We stand on a solid foundation, the truth—even if that truth is difficult to have to tell. Being a liar, however, sends us on crooked paths where we slip and fall.

People of true integrity are difficult to stereotype. Often they seem a bit unreal, because so much of what they do is clearly right. Their firm footing, however, makes them people we know we can trust. They show us that when we speak and live the truth, we walk with sure footsteps into and through every situation.

A WORD FOR TODAY

Integrity—a life that stands.

Today, Lord, may I be truthful and trustworthy; may I build a reputation for integrity so that I may walk safely.
