Read Proverbs 3

My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul. They are like jewels on a necklace.

Proverbs 3:21-22

Sometimes in our rush to “do” the next thing on the horizon, we don’t take time to think things through. As a result, we stumble into the future, fueled only by a dream. When we slow down and focus on the future goal, we can steady our gaze with a firm grasp on a good plan.

Before treading on new ground, it is a good idea to take a look over our shoulder. Enthusiasm is a poor substitute for common sense and discernment. Pinpointing prior mistakes in previous ventures decreases our chances of repeating them. Also, incorporating the insights of those who have already achieved similar life goals (buying a home, adopting a child, etc.) ensures that our own choices will be laced with an honorable legacy. Most important, we must diligently seek God’s counsel along the way. Goals change, and so do our plans for reaching them. Fortunately, we can rely on God’s relevant advice whenever a change of course might be wise.

A WORD FOR TODAY

A lot of worry can be avoided with common sense and discernment.

Today, Lord, help me to pattern my plan for the future after your godly ways.
