Worthwhile Reward

Read Proverbs 25

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

James 1:12

In Greek, the term used here for “crown” refers to a ceremonial victory wreath in athletics or the military. Like a weary marathon runner who patiently endures muscle-testing mile upon mile, so we must commit ourselves to completing our course. In the end, the prize will be worth the effort.

Temptation and testing is part of life. However, we cannot allow them to discourage us. Like a wounded warrior battling the temptation to surrender to the enemy, we must be steadfast. For no matter how severe the trial, the outcomes that await us are far more significant: God’s blessing and eternal life.

Temptation comes to us in earthly forms like materialism, sex, money, and power. They provide temporary satisfaction. In contrast, God rewards those who endure temptation with eternal benefits. He provides a winner’s medal that never tarnishes and a living victory wreath that never shrivels or dies. Although earthly testing is difficult, the reward is heavenly—heaven itself!

Patience is guaranteed a long-term reward.

Today, Lord, I may be tempted and tested. Help me decide beforehand, right now, to endure and not give in.
