Read Proverbs 3

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil.

Proverbs 3:7

If anyone could have been impressed with himself, it was Solomon. God made him the wisest man alive. Yet, despite Solomon’s great wisdom, he still made many poor choices that eventually led him away from God.

Solomon’s life illustrates a valuable lesson: Wisdom becomes useless if it is not applied. We can know what is right, but if we do not do what is right, our knowledge lacks value. Searching for wisdom does not put us on the wrong track, for we are told to search for it. However, the proverb points to something far beyond the search for wisdom. It tells us to fear the Lord and obey him. Fearing the Lord means giving God a proper place in our life. When we respect God in humility, we are more likely to turn from evil to obedience.

Fear of the Lord tempers wisdom.

Lord, help me not only to know your path, but also to walk that path in obedience.
