Read Proverbs 31

When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.

Proverbs 31:26

Which is easier: giving instructions or following them? While it is often easier to make up the rules than to follow someone else’s, life requires us to be adept at both. In the same way, leadership is both leading and following.

This proverb gives us insight into a person’s reputation for leading. How often do we run across an authority figure whose words are wise each time he or she speaks? How many in positions of power follow the rule of kindness in exercising their role? If others can express similar affirmations about our style of leadership, then we are in sync with scriptural command. However, too often, leaders are memorable for less than godly reasons.

Leadership may be a heady experience, though it should never be a “head trip.” When we use kindness as our governing rule, we will honor, not abuse, those who are under our authority—from coworkers to family members. Our reputation for leading others should emerge from a commitment to wisdom and kindness.
