An Awesome God
An Awesome God
Read Proverbs 1
When they cry for help, I will not answer. Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me. For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the LORD.
Proverbs 1:28-29
In 1988 Rich Mullins wrote a worship song titled, “Awesome God.” Its familiar lyrics highlight biblical events that display the awe-inspiring character of God. The chorus begins and ends giving honor to God’s greatness. Indeed, our God is awesome—in the fullest sense of the word. Although we often hear of God’s great love for us and his mercy toward us, we must never forget his incomprehensible grandeur. Hebrews 10:31 says that it is “a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” And Galatians 6:7 warns us, “Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.”
Our wise, powerful, and loving God earnestly desires to fellowship with us. But if we “hated knowledge and chose not to fear” him, we will find the heavens as hard as iron, and our God as elusive as vapor. Let us always approach our God with a healthy respect for his majesty and holiness.
A WORD FOR TODAY
Don’t lose your awe of God.
Today, Lord, take my hardened heart and make it fear you. Show me the glory of your righteousness and the beauty of your ways.
