Too Much

Too Much

Read Proverbs 25

Do you like honey? Don’t eat too much, or it will make you sick!

Proverbs 25:16

“You can’t have too much of a good thing,” or so the saying goes. Yet even the sweet taste of honey can become sickening if one eats too much of it. And a stomach full of sweet honey feels sour!

In other words, we can enjoy what God gives us to enjoy, but we are wise to do so in moderation. It is our penchant toward overindulgence or misuse of God’s gifts that leads to sin. A little wine may be fine—overindulgence leads to alcoholism. Food is for sustenance and often for enjoyment—overindulgence is gluttony. Our sexuality is a gift from God—misuse of it outside the bonds of marriage can lead to much heartache.

We can indeed have too much of—or find ourselves misusing—things that God intended for our good. How much wiser to know from where the gifts come and how to use them in order to please God.

A WORD FOR TODAY

Moderation even applies to good things.

Lord, thank you for all that you have given me to enjoy. Help me to use your gifts wisely.
