The Remedy For Mockery

Read Proverbs 17

Those who mock the poor insult their Maker; those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.

Proverbs 17:5

It is difficult to imagine the type of person who would mock the poor or rejoice at the misfortune of others. But in our own little ways, we may do just that without realizing it. Do we turn up our nose at the poorly dressed—and perhaps a bit fragrant—person at church who obviously has very little? Do we suppose that people with financial difficulties have probably caused their own problems and don’t deserve our concern? Do we walk away, thanking God that we are not poor like they are?

God makes it clear that he created all people—rich and poor alike (22:2). The rich have nothing that God has not given them; therefore, they have no reason to be arrogant. Jesus told a parable about this very topic in Luke 16:19-31. We ought to be compassionate to those less fortunate, seeking God’s wisdom for how we can help.
