Inevitable Judge

Read Proverbs 23

Don’t cheat your neighbor by moving the ancient boundary markers; don’t take the land of defenseless orphans. For their Redeemer is strong; he himself will bring their charges against you.

Proverbs 23:10-11

The word Redeemer has two very distinct applications in this proverb. Within the culture of Israel, orphans and widows were the responsibility of their extended family, represented by the closest relative, who was called a “redeemer.” An excellent example of how this worked can be seen in the book of Ruth.

From the perspective of God’s purposes in composing Scripture, the Old Testament redeemers were built into the culture so that we could understand the role and wonder of the great Redeemer, Jesus. His life, death, and resurrection declare the divine strength behind God’s plan.

Whatever the temporary successes of evil or injustice in this world, God has the final judgment. Whatever boundaries are violated or property or dignity stolen, God will make things right in his time.

God has the final word.
