Driving Toward Happiness

Driving Toward Happiness

Read Proverbs 10

Doing wrong is fun for a fool, but living wisely brings pleasure to the sensible.

Proverbs 10:23

Sometimes doing the “right” thing seems boring—even irritating. For example, stopping for a red light is a nuisance, while speeding through the intersection on a yellow is tempting. What keeps drivers braking for a red light?

From a practical point of view, most drivers realize that red lights are sensible tools. For the foolish driver, however, running a light may seem like fun, only the thrill doesn’t last. That type of irresponsible behavior doesn’t lead to genuine happiness. It leads only to a wrecked car—and perhaps wrecked lives.

While we may not enjoy putting on the brakes, we appreciate traffic rules for protecting us from danger on the road. This proverb reminds us that wise conduct is the first step toward happiness. If we make a habit of acting wisely, we grow accustomed to its benefits. Soon, wise conduct becomes a pleasure.
