A Word Of Advice

Read Proverbs 15

Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.

Proverbs 15:22

Columnist Ann Landers fed advice to an estimated 90 million readers. Other advice-giving radio hosts have large audiences, as well. Their success has been based on this fact: We all have plans and problems that we can’t handle on our own. Sometimes an outside perspective is just what we need to see our situation clearly.

While such general advice may be helpful, we can access wise counseling through an alternate venue: the Christian community. This advice comes with accountability and perspective. A radio host doesn’t know his or her callers except from what they say. Those in the Christian community know us.

Proverbs 15:22 directs us to seek advice from a number of wise friends. This proverb, however, doesn’t tell us to follow every piece of advice we receive—we accept advice in light of the Bible. Advice should never contradict what God says in the Scriptures. Pursuing advice while at the same time studying the Bible helps us to avoid disasters we would otherwise suffer on our own.
