Seeking God’s Confirmation

Gideon said to God, “If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised, prove it to me in this way. I will put a wool fleece on the threshing floor tonight. If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning but the ground is dry, then I will know that you are going to help me rescue Israel as you promised.” And that is just what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out a whole bowlful of water.

Judges 6:36-38

There are times when we simply can’t believe what God is asking us to do. Such was the case with Gideon. God had told Gideon that he was to rescue Israel from the Midianites, but Gideon couldn’t believe it. He asked for a sign to confirm God’s call. When God granted him the sign, Gideon asked for yet another sign, and God answered again. Finally convinced, Gideon obeyed. He led an army of Israelites against the Midianites. God gave him a miraculous victory over them, just as he had promised.

God was gracious in answering Gideon’s requests for a sign, and he is often gracious to our requests as well. But if we already know what God’s will is—especially as he has revealed it in his written Word—we should not delay in carrying it out. Ask God to show you what he wants you to do and then step out in faith and do it.
