Praying To Our Helper

Come with great power, O God, and rescue me!

Defend me with your might.

Listen to my prayer, O God.

Pay attention to my plea.

For strangers are attacking me;

violent people are trying to kill me.

They care nothing for God.

Psalm 54:1-3

David had served King Saul for years and led his army to victory against Israel’s enemies. Yet, suddenly, Saul turned against David and tried to kill him. As David fled, he suffered a series of betrayals, from Doeg the Edomite to the citizens of Keilah to the Ziphites (see 1 Samuel 22–23). It was during this time—when everyone seemed to be against him—that David wrote this prayer. He prayed that God would come quickly to defend him. He acknowledged that God was the only one who could keep him alive—and God did keep David alive (Psalm 54:4) and eventually placed him on Israel’s throne.

The same God who defended David is willing to come to our rescue as well. Commit your problems to him today.
