Praying For Victory

In times of trouble, may the LORD answer your cry.

May the name of the God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm.

May he send you help from his sanctuary

and strengthen you from Jerusalem.

May he remember all your gifts

and look favorably on your burnt offerings.

May he grant your heart’s desires

and make all your plans succeed.

May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory

and raise a victory banner in the name of our God.

May the LORD answer all your prayers.

Psalm 20:1-5

Imagine the tips of sharpened weapons gleaming in the early morning sun as God’s people, armed for battle, encouraged their king with their prayers. As they assembled themselves to march out against Israel’s foes, they shouted this prayer under the direction of David’s director of music.

Who knows what battles the people you love might be facing today? As you think of friends and family members, picture them assembling themselves for battle—getting ready for the new school year, going to work, mulling through what they must accomplish that day. Then pray for victory in what they must do. Pray that their accomplishments might bring glory to God; then pray the same for yourself.
