Praise the LORD!

Praise God in his sanctuary;

praise him in his mighty heaven!

Praise him for his mighty works;

praise his unequaled greatness!

Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn;

praise him with the lyre and harp!

Praise him with the tambourine and dancing;

praise him with strings and flutes! . . .

Let everything that breathes sing praises to the LORD!

Psalm 150:1-6

When we call out, “Praise the Lord!” it serves two purposes. It expresses our heartfelt adoration of our living Lord; yet it also calls upon others to do the same. We praise our God first of all for who he is—“his unequaled greatness”—and what he does—“his mighty works.” We search for ways to describe the Infinite: “Praise him in his mighty heaven!” We underscore our praise to God with music: the blowing of a “ram’s horn,” the strumming of a “lyre and harp,” and the playing of “strings and flutes.” Nothing but a chorus of all living things would be fit to render praise to our Creator.
