Humbling Ourselves Before God

Job replied to the LORD:

“I know that you can do anything,

and no one can stop you.

You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’

It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about,

things far too wonderful for me.

You said, ‘Listen and I will speak!

I have some questions for you,

and you must answer them.’

I had only heard about you before,

but now I have seen you with my own eyes.

I take back everything I said,

and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.”

Job 42:1-6

When we complain to God, we may speak without thinking and have to take back our words. Job had plenty of time to think, yet he still had to repent for his lack of humility. The Lord listened to Job’s complaints, criticisms, and questions, and then soundly rebuked him, asking, “You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” (Job 40:2). Chastened and humbled by God, Job immediately repented of what he said and asked the Lord to forgive him. We may not openly challenge God as Job did, but sometimes we doubt God’s care for us. In those times, God wants us to come to him and trust that he holds the answers and that he is good, just, and loving.

Ask for faith to overcome your doubts. Trust God and leave your complaints in his hands.
