Declaring God As Our Helper

LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me.

Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.

For troubles surround me—

too many to count!

My sins pile up so high

I can’t see my way out.

They outnumber the hairs on my head.

I have lost all courage. . . .

As for me, since I am poor and needy,

let the Lord keep me in his thoughts.

You are my helper and my savior.

O my God, do not delay.

Psalm 40:11-12, 17

As the king over all Israel, David had a mountain of riches—jewels, money, gold, and numerous servants to do his bidding. Yet David came to a place in his life where he proclaimed that God alone was his “helper.” We don’t know the specific situation for which this prayer was written, but we can imagine it was a landmark in David’s life.

What does it take for you to claim God as your “helper and savior”? What would make you look solely to God for a solution to your problems? If you are facing a difficult situation, bring this before God in prayer. Then declare to God that you are trusting him to rescue you.
