WHETHER IT’S IN MINISTRY or the corporate world, athletics or academics, it brings joy to a father’s heart to see his children answer God’s call on their lives.

The apostle Paul had a unique relationship with Timothy. Though they were not related by blood, Paul was a mentor and teacher to Timothy, and they served together in helping to plant some of the first churches. In writing to the church at Philippi, Paul said he knew no one else who could do the job as well as Timothy (Philippians 2:20). Paul even called Timothy “my true son in the faith” (1 Timothy 1:2).

They were very close—like father and son.

That relationship didn’t happen overnight, and your relationship with your sons (and daughters) takes time to cultivate. But in addition to playing catch with them, why not do missions together? They will learn a lot as they watch you serve and as they serve too. Volunteer your family to serve in a soup kitchen. Do a backyard Bible club together. Go to a retirement home and sing songs and chat with residents. Prayer-walk your neighborhood together. Get creative; there are plenty of options.

Doing a small mission project as a family will build lasting memories of serving God together while helping to cultivate a serving heart in your kids.

BOTTOM LINE

There is no greater joy for a dad than to see his sons and daughters serving Jesus. Look for opportunities to make an impact with your kids.
