God Won’t Forget You

Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins.

Isaiah 49:15-16

TATTOOS HAVE COME A LONG WAY since Ötzi the Iceman, the 5,300-year-old mummy discovered in the Alps in 1991, had his engraved. Traditionally, tats are reserved for names or symbols that people want to be associated with permanently. Unfortunately, many men are not known for their loyalty to one love. In a famous painting by Norman Rockwell, a sailor is getting a tattoo of a woman’s name on his arm. Yet above her name, he has the names of six other women—all crossed out!

Fortunately, God’s faithfulness is unparalleled. Just as a nursing mother bonds in a unique way with her infant child, so God bonds with His children. He promises He will never forget you, even going so far as to inscribe your name—not on His back but on His hands, where He is constantly reminded of you. And God knows where you live. The walls of the home of your heart are always before Him; in fact, He is the divine architect who has drawn up the blueprints for your life (Psalm 139).

In this day and age when so much seems temporary—there’s even “painless” tattoo removal—it is comforting to know that our heavenly Father will never leave us or forsake us. His love is a permanent inscription on our lives. His faithfulness provides stability in an ever-changing, unstable world. He will never lose sight of us, never stop thinking of us, never fail to take care of us. We don’t have to fear being abandoned or forgotten.

BOTTOM LINE

God loves you with an everlasting love, and He will never give up on you. Pray for that knowledge to sink in deeper.
