Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.

Colossians 3:19

WADE WAS SO THANKFUL that he and his wife, Miranda, had scheduled a weekend getaway to the mountains. Three children, two jobs, and volunteer commitments hadn’t left much time for them as a couple lately. The retreat helped them to reconnect emotionally and talk about things of substance.

We may have felt as if we married our soul mate, but unfortunately, many couples end up with nothing more than a roommate after a few years of marriage. With the demands of our careers, school, kids’ activities, church responsibilities, and so on, pursuing intimacy seldom is an urgent priority like a deadline at work or getting kids to an event on time. Even if our marriage is not in immediate jeopardy, are we simply “getting along” as a couple, or are we experiencing the intimacy we long for?

Most couples work on their marriage during leftover time between events and obligations. Many marriage experts recommend at least a quarterly getaway without the kids: a day trip, a weekend outing, or a long night out. But instead of this time being spent as a regular date, this time could be reserved for asking the tough questions, assessing our roles as husband and wife, as father and mother, as lovers, etc.

When was the last time you and your wife planned a time to discuss the health of your marriage?

BOTTOM LINE

To have the intimacy we desire in marriage, we must be intentional with our time.
