And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

THE IDEA OF A VIRGIN GIVING birth to the Son of God who would later die for the sins of the world may be a familiar part of our creed, but it should be no less astonishing to us than the first time we heard about it. Christmas is a miracle. It is Almighty God, “[who] made heaven and earth” (Psalm 146:6), reaching down into our completely hopeless situation and rescuing us in the humblest, yet most dramatic, way.

We forget that we are not in control. We didn’t create ourselves, and we can’t save ourselves. Everything depends on God. Christmas reminds us of that fact. God came to earth to rescue us. This is a stunning truth that can easily be taken for granted. What should our response be to such an incredible occurrence? Deep gratitude: “Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words” (2 Corinthians 9:15).

Christmas reminds us that nothing is ever hopeless with God. You may feel as if you have some hopeless circumstances in your life that you are powerless to do anything about. You may have even been praying about these things for some time, and so far nothing has changed. There just doesn’t seem to be an answer. The truth is that from a human perspective, circumstances can look pretty hopeless sometimes. But that doesn’t mean they are hopeless. God can do the miraculous. Christmas is proof of that. Keep hoping and praying.

BOTTOM LINE

Allow the miracle of Christmas to change how you think about the world and your life. Even when things look bad, God is still able to comfort us and sustain us.
