Excuses, Excuses

But they all began making excuses.

Luke 14:18

REMEMBER THE GIRL IN high school who didn’t want to go out with you but was too nice to come out and say it? She had all kinds of excuses. The more reasons she came up with, the more determined you became to overcome them. Then she really lowered the boom. She thought of you like a brother!

All these years later, we’re still surrounded by reasons why something can’t be done. Some are valid, and some are not. Kids have excuses for not cleaning their rooms. We have excuses not to mow the yard or help with the dishes, and the list goes on.

We also might make excuses when it comes to helping out at church. We’re too busy. We’re not gifted in that area. The kids are in sports. We’ve never done that before. We wouldn’t be very good at it. It’s perfectly acceptable to want to serve in areas where we’re gifted, and trying something new won’t earn us points with God. But sometimes it’s great to get out of our comfort zone a little bit.

The key here is a willingness to serve if you possibly can. What are you good at? If you’re the creative sort, prayerfully consider helping out with the church website or newsletter. If you’re an organizer, there are bound to be all kinds of committees that would love to have your help. Do you love kids? Help out in the nursery or with the student ministry. Just go for it, wherever opportunity and ability meet.

Ask God where He wants you to serve in your church and for His Kingdom.
