Driftwood

We must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.

Hebrews 2:1

IT’S DOUBTFUL THAT we’ll wake up one morning and decide to abandon our faith or commit an atrocious sin. But little by little, our decisions can lead us to slowly drift away from our faith. And the sin we think we’ll never commit may become a real possibility down the road if we continue to drift.

The writer of Hebrews says it becomes increasingly important to pay attention to God’s Word. Life really is all about Jesus and following Him. But when we make life all about us, we will begin to drift, because Jesus now has competition for our affections. When we decide to make ourselves the central character in our lives, it always leads to drifting.

Neglecting the Bible is often both a cause and a symptom of drifting. You may start to think, I’ve read that before, heard that before, and studied that before, and I already know it. And though you may not feel a violent undercurrent, you’ve begun to break away from the structure and foundation of your faith.

Prayerfully invite a Christian buddy to ask you the tough questions about your thought life, your financial habits, and your time alone in prayer and in the Word. Ask your friend to help you discover any currents in your life that are leading you to drift away. Then thank your friend for speaking the truth in love, and thank God that He rescues and repurposes driftwood of all kinds.

BOTTOM LINE

It’s so easy to drift and so easy to ignore it for a time. But though we can sometimes drift, it is never too late to repent and refocus on God and His will.
