Don’t Try To Fix It

“So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”

Mark 2:10-11

ACCORDING TO THE ART OF Manliness website, every man must own four essential power tools: a cordless drill, a reciprocating saw, an oscillating multi-tool, and a circular saw. (Can we all let loose a manly grunt?) The truth is, men love tools because we love to fix things. Just give us some power tools and a free afternoon and watch what we can accomplish.

Jesus could fix things too. He worked as a carpenter with His earthly father, Joseph. Jesus could probably build a wall, fix a chair, or hang a door. But Jesus didn’t come to fix things; He came to transform them.

The Gospel of Mark describes a scene where four friends pulled off the roof of a house and lowered their paralyzed buddy down to where Jesus was teaching. Jesus saw the paralytic and said, “My child, your sins are forgiven” (Mark 2:5). What do you think the man’s friends were thinking? Hey, we just want him fixed so he can walk again. What does having his sins forgiven have to do with anything?

But Jesus had a deeper purpose. He wanted this man’s life to be transformed. That should be one of the goals of our marriages, too. When our eyes are focused on ourselves or on our wives, it’s easy to see things that need to be fixed. However, when we fix our eyes on Jesus, we can be transformed to have a truer life and a better marriage.

BOTTOM LINE

Do you want to fix things or transform them? Follow Jesus’ example and go deeper in your life and in your marriage. It’s worth it.
